Where Creativity Meets Child Development

Our Approach

At Beehive Academy, art is more than making something beautiful. Our Art & Creativity Academy uses hands-on visual arts to strengthen creativity, fine-motor development, visual-motor skills, planning, problem-solving, communication, attention, flexibility, persistence, and confidence.

Children explore a wide variety of artistic media and techniques, including drawing, watercolor, acrylic painting, pastels, charcoal, clay and ceramics, sculpture, mosaics, printmaking, textiles, collage, nature art, mixed media, design, and age-appropriate glass art projects. Students are also introduced to famous artists, artistic movements, cultures, and art history so they learn not only how to create art, but how art has been used to communicate ideas throughout history.

Art With a Developmental Purpose.

Our program is intentionally different from a traditional art studio or craft class. Each project is selected to teach artistic concepts while also supporting important developmental skills.

Students practice:

Our philosophy emphasizes the creative process rather than producing identical finished products. Children are taught techniques and concepts, but they are encouraged to make choices, experiment, solve problems, and develop their own artistic voice.

  • Small, Teacher-Led Classes

    Beehive classes are intentionally small and hands-on. Rather than relying on videos, apps, or computer-based instruction, students learn directly from their teacher through demonstrations, guided practice, experimentation, discussion, and real materials.

    Projects can be adapted for different developmental and skill levels, allowing neurotypical and neurodivergent students to participate meaningfully while working toward individual growth.

Developmental Art Levels

  • Little Artists | Ages 3–5

    Young artists discover color, shape, texture, lines, patterns, and materials through developmentally appropriate art experiences.

    Projects may include painting, collage, clay, sensory art, printing, weaving, nature art, masks, self-portraits, symmetry projects, and simple three-dimensional creations.

    The emphasis is on exploration, fine-motor development, pre-writing skills, visual perception, following directions, language, creativity, and learning how to participate successfully in a teacher-led art class.

  • Emerging Artists | Ages 5–7

    Students begin learning foundational artistic techniques while becoming more intentional about planning and creating their work.

    Projects introduce drawing, painting, watercolor, clay sculpture, mosaics, color theory, printmaking, collage, mixed media, architecture, famous artists, and art history.

    Students learn that artists make plans, experiment, revise their ideas, solve problems, and use art to communicate.

  • Developing Artists | Ages 7–10

    Students move beyond basic exploration into more purposeful study of technique, design, composition, perspective, color, form, texture, and three-dimensional construction.

    Projects may incorporate acrylics, watercolor, charcoal, pastels, sculpture, clay, printmaking, textiles, mixed media, architecture, perspective drawing, famous artists, and cultural art traditions.

    Students are increasingly expected to plan projects, select materials, explain artistic choices, evaluate their work, and independently solve creative problems.

  • Studio Artists | Ages 10–14+

    Older students receive increasingly sophisticated instruction in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, mixed media, textiles, design, composition, and art history.

    Students learn to develop an idea from concept through finished work, use artistic vocabulary, refine technique, analyze artwork, participate in constructive critique, and begin developing a personal artistic style and portfolio.

Our Art Showcase

Every six months, Beehive Academy transforms into an Art Gallery, giving our young artists the opportunity to proudly exhibit the work they have created throughout the semester.

The gallery is more than an art display—it is the culmination of months of learning, experimenting, practicing, problem-solving, and creating. Families, friends, and members of the Beehive community are invited to walk through the gallery and celebrate each student's artistic growth and accomplishments.

Throughout the six-month period, students select pieces they are especially proud of to save for the exhibition. Artwork may include paintings, drawings, watercolor, clay and ceramics, sculpture, mosaics, printmaking, textiles, mixed media, architecture and design projects, and other original creations.
