PROMPT® Speech Therapy at Beehive Academy

Helping Children Develop Clear, Confident Communication Through Touch, Movement, and Evidence-Based Therapy

At Beehive Academy, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to communicate confidently and effectively. Our Speech-Language Pathologists are trained in PROMPT® (Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets), an internationally recognized, evidence-based approach to speech therapy that helps children develop the motor movements needed for clear and intelligible speech.

Rather than focusing only on the sounds a child produces, PROMPT therapy addresses how speech is physically produced by improving the coordination of the jaw, lips, tongue, facial muscles, breath support, and voice. This integrated approach helps children develop speech that is more accurate, natural, and functional in everyday communication.

Whether a child is saying their first words, struggling to pronounce sounds clearly, or has a motor speech disorder, PROMPT provides individualized strategies that build the foundation for successful communication.

What Is PROMPT®?

PROMPT (Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets) is a specialized speech therapy approach that combines tactile, visual, auditory, and verbal cues to teach the movements required for speech.

During therapy, the Speech-Language Pathologist may use gentle touch cues on a child's face, jaw, and under the chin to help guide the precise movements needed to produce sounds, syllables, words, and sentences. These cues provide immediate feedback, helping children understand how speech should feel as well as how it should sound.

PROMPT therapy is individualized for every child and is integrated into meaningful play, conversation, and functional communication activities.

Who Can Benefit from PROMPT Therapy?

PROMPT may benefit children who experience:

  • Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)

  • Motor speech disorders

  • Speech sound disorders

  • Articulation disorders

  • Phonological disorders

  • Dysarthria

  • Developmental delays affecting speech

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder with motor speech challenges

  • Neurological conditions affecting speech production

  • Difficulties coordinating oral movements for speech

  • Reduced speech intelligibility

  • Delayed speech development

Every child receives a comprehensive speech and language evaluation to determine whether PROMPT techniques are appropriate for their individual needs.

What Skills Does PROMPT Help Develop?

PROMPT therapy supports many aspects of speech production, including:

Speech Sound Production

Children learn to produce speech sounds more accurately by developing the motor movements required for clear articulation.

Motor Planning

Children improve their ability to plan, sequence, and coordinate the movements needed to produce words and sentences.

Oral Motor Control

Therapy strengthens coordination of the jaw, lips, tongue, and facial muscles used during speech.

Speech Intelligibility

As movement patterns become more efficient, children often become easier for family members, teachers, and peers to understand.

Prosody

Children learn appropriate rhythm, stress, pacing, and intonation, making speech sound more natural.

Speech Sequencing

Students practice moving smoothly between sounds, syllables, and words with increasing accuracy and fluency.

Our Whole-Child Approach to Speech

At Beehive Academy, speech therapy is never limited to practicing sounds in isolation. We recognize that communication develops through the interaction of many developmental systems.

Our PROMPT-trained Speech-Language Pathologists also support:

Language Development

Children build:

  • Receptive language

  • Expressive language

  • Vocabulary

  • Sentence development

  • Grammar

  • Conversation skills

  • Narrative language

  • Listening comprehension

Communication Skills

Therapy targets functional communication in everyday environments by helping children:

  • Request wants and needs

  • Ask and answer questions

  • Participate in conversations

  • Communicate with peers

  • Communicate with adults

  • Express ideas and emotions

  • Increase confidence during social interactions

Cognitive Development

Speech production relies on many cognitive processes. Therapy also supports:

  • Attention

  • Working memory

  • Sequencing

  • Processing speed

  • Motor planning

  • Problem-solving

  • Cognitive flexibility

Social Communication

Children practice using speech during meaningful social interactions by learning to:

  • Take conversational turns

  • Maintain topics

  • Initiate conversations

  • Repair communication breakdowns

  • Interpret social cues

  • Build friendships

  • Participate successfully in group activities

Oral Motor Coordination

PROMPT helps children develop coordinated movement of the muscles involved in speech, including:

  • Jaw stability

  • Lip movement

  • Tongue placement

  • Breath support

  • Voice control

  • Coordinated movement between speech structures

What Makes Beehive Academy Different?

PROMPT therapy at Beehive Academy is integrated into a collaborative, multidisciplinary model of care. Our Speech-Language Pathologists work alongside professionals in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Occupational Therapy (OT), educational support, and developmental enrichment programs to help children generalize communication skills across real-life environments.

Children have opportunities to practice newly learned speech skills during:

  • Play groups

  • Social skills groups

  • Music classes

  • Reading programs

  • Preschool readiness classes

  • Movement activities

  • Everyday conversations with peers and adults

This collaborative approach helps children move beyond practicing speech in the therapy room and begin using their communication skills confidently throughout daily life.

Individualized Therapy for Every Child

No two children develop speech in exactly the same way. Every treatment plan is individualized based on the child's strengths, challenges, developmental level, and communication goals.

Therapy may include:

  • PROMPT tactile cueing

  • Motor speech practice

  • Speech sound intervention

  • Language development

  • Play-based learning

  • Visual supports

  • Parent coaching

  • Home practice strategies

  • Functional communication activities

  • Collaborative goal planning

Our focus is always on helping children communicate more effectively in the environments that matter most.

Parent Involvement Matters

Parents are an essential part of the therapy process. Throughout treatment, families receive education, coaching, and practical strategies that can be incorporated into daily routines to support continued progress at home.

We believe that communication grows fastest when therapists and families work together.

Helping Children Find Their Voice

At Beehive Academy, our goal is not simply to teach children to produce sounds correctly—it is to help them communicate confidently with the people who matter most.

Through PROMPT-trained speech therapy, individualized intervention, and a collaborative developmental approach, we help children build the speech, language, and communication skills they need to succeed at home, at school, and in their communities.

Helping every child develop the confidence to be heard, understood, and connected.
